The Iraqi army announces that Fallujah has been liberated from Isis. Around 1,800 militants died in the battle to retake the city, which was captured by Isis in January 2014.

Russia says that Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has apologised to Vladimir Putin for the downing of a Russian jet in November 2015. The countries had disagreed over whether the incident had taken place in Turkish or Syrian airspace.

Forty-five people die and more than 230 are wounded in a terror attack at Atatürk airport in Istanbul. Turkish authorities believe the gunmen, who blew themselves up in the international terminal when police fired at them, had links to Isis.

“For heaven’s sake man, go” — David Cameron taunts Jeremy Corbyn at prime minister’s questions in parliament. The departing Conservative leader says his Labour rival should resign after losing a vote of no confidence.

Thu 30th June 2016
Boris Johnson quits the Conservative party leadership contest. The former London mayor, who was widely considered the favourite to replace David Cameron, announces his withdrawal shortly after Michael Gove reveals that he will stand for the post himself rather than support his fellow Brexit campaigner.

Fri 1st July 2016
Austria’s constitutional court annuls the result of May’s presidential election due to irregularities in several constituencies. The poll saw the Green-backed candidate Alexander Van der Bellen narrowly defeat a far-right candidate, the Freedom Party’s Norbert Hofer, by 30,863 votes.

Two minutes of silence are observed at the Thiepval war memorial in France to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. Over one million men were killed or wounded during the 141-day battle.

An attack on a café in Dhaka, Bangladesh, ends with 28 people dead, including 20 hostages. Bangladeshi commandos stormed the café after a 12-hour siege. Isis claims responsibility.
