Manchester City’s spending spree in July 2017 meant that by the start of the 2017/18 football season, the club boasted four of the world’s five most expensive defenders. Meanwhile, on 11th July, Georgian president Giorgi Margvelashvilithe warned of “creeping occupation” after Russia moved its border several hundred metres into his country.

So in DG #28 we compared Man City’s outlay on its defence – just a portion of its player budget – to the entire annual defence expenditure of a country dealing with the threat of annexation…
