On 13th June 2018 anti-Houthi forces backed by the UAE began an assault on Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, significantly escalating the country’s brutal civil war. Not only one of the most destructive conflict of recent times, it’s also one of the most complex.

Scroll over the map above to see a detailed breakdown of the various combatants and their allies, both internal and external to Yemen, and the regions they controlled at the time. And for an in-depth explanation of the war’s background, including the reasons behind the intervention of Saudi Arabia and crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, see our report from Middle East analyst Peter Salisbury, from DG #31.
