Graphic Journalism Masterclass (One Day)
Graphic journalism is a form of non-fiction visual storytelling that combines drawing and text to respond to the world around us. Graphic journalists use techniques drawn from comics, graphic memoirs, infographics, and reportage art to tell complex stories in compelling visual shorthand. Graphic journalism is a growing field, widely used across news media today, including in Delayed Gratification.

The course is taught over one day, in person, at Somerset House, London (1-6 pm). During the day participants will undertake a series of targeted exercises on drawing on location, visual storytelling, sequence, editing, and structuring stories.

Participants will also discuss ideas for a longer piece of graphic journalism which they are invited to submit to the tutor within a month after the masterclass, on which they will receive written feedback.

The class is limited to a maximum of 15 attendees.

Restrictions
The course is for adults only. No previous training in art is required, but a willingness to draw and experiment with different visual approaches is essential.

The tutor
Carol Adlam is a UK-based writer and illustrator who specialises in reportage artwork, graphic novels, and book illustration. She’s drawn graphic journalism pieces for Delayed Gratification (some recent examples here, here and here), has been the writer and illustrator-in-residence at the University of St Andrews and a visiting fellow at Girton College, Cambridge. In 2018 she was a winner at the World Illustration Awards and from 2017-2018 she was the visiting artist at the National Archives in Kew.

Pre-class task
Identify a news story that you would like to explore through graphic journalism and write down three key points about the story that you would like to cover. The story could be from local news, or an autobiographical event, an event/news story from the other side of the world, or (in keeping with the principles of Slow Journalism) something that happened some time ago but that you think is worth returning to and reflecting on.
