Who’s headlining Glastonbury?

How it works: Musical acts that headlined the main stage of Glastonbury are listed in chronological order with key characteristics illustrated.

Artists are colour-coded by genre:

Due to the fluid nature of the festival in the early years there is some debate about which act headlined, with even the festival organisers unable to give us a definitive list. Our source for this list is the Telegraph which used “books, personal reminiscences, internet forums and magazine reports” to compile it.

In the case of solo acts that first released albums as a member of a group (eg Paul McCartney/The Beatles) the date of the release of the group’s debut album is taken.

*While Gorillaz are technically a virtual group, characteristics are based on the two founders, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn.
