The Slow Journalism magazine gets an upgrade
Each year in the issue that covers January to March we give the magazine a redesign. Often this is a near-imperceptible tweak, a minor upgrade to keep Delayed Gratification looking beautiful despite its advancing years (13 and counting).
This year, however, we’ve really gone for it. Driven by the desire to help readers reset their relationship with the news, we’ve moved the three almanac sections previously paced throughout the magazine into one all-singing-and-dancing section at the front (p6) and brought in short ‘Briefing’ features that catch you up on big stories from the quarter in minutes (p28).
We’ve also introduced a new cultural review of the quarter, Playlist (p112). We’ve always had cultural stories in DG, including the Movie matrix (p118), but these sometimes felt a bit disjointed, dotted around the magazine. Now they have their own section at the back where you’ll find three months of critical recommendations condensed into eight pages, a boon for plotting what to read, watch and listen to.
The final parts of this quiet revolution are new fonts and colours for a cleaner, easier read – and a move to a different type of paper for the printed version to give us crisper images. We hope this will make everything from photo features on Haitian uprisings (p68) to long reads on Colombia’s ‘false positives’ scandal (p88) and infographic explainers on the reign of Vladimir Putin (p102) that bit more engaging and informative.
As ever, we’d love to hear your thoughts – drop us a line on theeditors@slow-journalism.com and let us know what you make of the new look.
Enjoy the issue!
