Can you describe how your work is created?

I won’t even attempt to sit down and produce a piece until it has been working out in my head for a couple of days. I get most of my inspiration lying down, near sleep. The actual production process is quite quick: I use Photoshop and Illustrator to bring my thoughts to life quickly not to doodle or sketch out ideas. For me, this is the attraction of digital art, that I can bring my work to life as soon as the ideas are manifested in my mind. I have been a painter for many years and had become frustrated by how long a painting would take – weeks or months due to my persistent perfectionism. By the time I finished one, dozens of others had come and gone forever within my mind. Now the messages have become much more significant than the medium itself.

What does the piece ‘Explore’ mean to you?

We are all explorers somewhere between the two great unknowns, birth and death… and we face new frontiers each step of the way.

Your latest work features city maps: what’s the significance?

I used to want to see the whole world. I dropped out of university in my first year and India was my first stop… I immediately found peace and liberation in their spirituality and culture and was able to live a life mostly free of government bureaucracies and materialism. I lived there for almost ten years, travelling through a few other countries but usually just to find a way back to India.  It was easy to support a humble lifestyle selling artwork once in a while to other tourists as they passed by. Eventually for legal reasons I had to make the decision to leave the country, but I am planning on returning eventually on a long term basis.

Where is your work made?

Now I live in my home studio. I don’t hang my art on my walls because I am a perfectionist and I would always want to be adjusting it: I try not to even look at my finished artwork. I don’t have any furniture aside from my work desk and a nice chair that my dog likes. I prefer open space to eat, sleep and stretch on and so does my dog.

Some of your work seems quite political, particularly ‘Wall Street Bankers’. What sort of ideas – political or otherwise – do you hope to convey in your work?

We have made so many incredible advances in such a short period of time and I think we have clearly outgrown these ancient financial, legal and government systems in which too few individuals are making decisions that affect too many. We are in an incredible time because we can see the house of cards shaking, we can see the man behind the curtain.
We should rejoice in this time by pressing the reset button on everything we have been told.

You live alone with your dog and describe yourself as a bit of a recluse – how does that come out in your work? 

I have always had a lot of trouble putting thoughts into the right words, written or verbal. It usually would result in a misunderstanding. When I create images without words, my messages are much clearer.

What brings you the most satisfaction in your working life?

I just like knowing that I added something to this world and it was accepted in some way.
